There are two power sources currently being used for RC monster trucks. The first is electric (or battery) powered and the second is fuel powered. There are benefits and drawbacks to each power source, but to decide which source to use depends on the use of the RC monster truck.

RC monster trucks can be powered by standard gasoline, if this is the case they are referred to as gasoline RC monster trucks. The other common fuel source is nitro when nitro is the fuel source the truck is referred to as a gas RC monster truck. The mixture of nitro fuel usually contains up to 65% nitromethane which can give the vehicle 2.4 times more power than a gasoline only RC monster truck.

Fuel powered is a choice many RC monster truck racers prefer, because of the speeds they can attain and the average running time is longer. The average speed of a gas RC monster truck is 25 to 75 mph, but the record speed of an RC vehicle is 111 mph.

Although the speed is fast and the flames produced by nitro are cool to look at there are drawbacks to using a gas RC monster truck. The smoke and dirt produced by the fuel powered RC monster truck leaves a lot of residual dirt on the various parts of the vehicle after use. The parts have to be regular cleaned with special cleaners that contain alcohol to keep them functioning. Many of the parts have to be replaced frequently due to the stubbornness of the dirt and the parts deteriorate quicker.

Nitro fuel for gas RC monster trucks can be purchased online or at many hobby stores by the quart, by the gallon or if needed in bulk quantities. Mixtures are available with different concentration levels of nitromethane depending on the requirements of the driver. Gas RC monster trucks can be tuned or have parts replaced to allow a higher nitro percentage to get faster speeds.

Gas RC monster trucks are definitely for the more serious hobbyist due to the constant care, cleaning and maintenance they require, but they offer the intense speed and thrill that not even the amateur can not deny.
